Dark night of the soul

When we are struggling with any aspect of our lives, whether it be health, finance or relationship issues, we are the most vulnerable to the many aspects of the human condition that cause us pain.

Whether we choose to live a life that is filled with friends and family or a life of solitude, we are at some point going to encounter the difficult aspects of life. When this happens, it is very easy to find that we sometimes slip out of our bliss and into our humanness. This is the time when we begin, once again, to listen to all the chatter that is constantly filling our heads. And during this time, we come face to face with more of our fears.

Every day I encounter people that seem to live very happy lives. They are in a relationship that seems to be perfect. Or they have a job that is a joy and pays well too. Or their lives are filled with friends that care about them. And as I observe these people, as I tune in to their energy, I hear the truth of the fears that they live with. And although they may be small, they are still there. One of the truths of the human condition is that as long as we are experiencing physical form in a physical world, we are still in the process of learning. And that means that we are in the state of duality that allows us to experience physical form. And that state of duality contains both sides of every emotion. There is love, and there is hate. There is confidence and there is fear. There is health, and there is unhealth. There are riches and there is poverty. Every part of our life has an opposite. This is the scenario we set up when we came here. To know the divine, we must understand the opposite of the divine. What is the opposite of divine? Everything that is not pure love.

I am not saying that no one experiences happiness. Nor am I saying that everyone is miserable. I am saying that as long as we are in human form, we will continue to experience both aspects of the duality of human life. And as long as we doing this, we will have dark nights of the soul. Whenever you are feeling down for any reason, you open your mind to all the thoughts you still carry that are not positive. And they are just waiting for you! And they are so happy to see you! Out they come, like little black dogs, wagging their tails, jumping up and down, and filling you with all the negative aspects of life that you don't want to see and hear!

So the next time you find yourself in a state of despair, just stop. Stop whatever thoughts you are having, stop whatever feelings you are experiencing, stop the chatter in your mind. Just stop! Okay, now take a deep breath. Now let it out. Now take another deep breath. Now let it out. Okay, one more deep breath. Now let it out. Okay, now you are beginning to feed your starving body the oxygen it has been needing while you were in a state of disrepair. Now with every breath you take in, feel the love the universe is surrounding you with. And with every breath you breathe out, release part of the angst you are feeling. Soon you will find that you are feeling a little better. Now stand up and stretch. Really stretch your arms, your legs, your torso. Move your head around. Roll your shoulders. Start to feel the tension your body has been holding, and then release it. Once you have begun the process and can feel the changes happening within yourself, take yourself to your quiet place and meditate for a while. Place yourself in a state of gratitude for these experiences. After all, without these experiences you would never understand the state of bliss you strive for.

I know that each of us is being the best we can be. There is nothing else we can do. As we grow and learn we become closer to knowing our divine self. In that moment when we truly know our divine self, we will once again find ourselves in a state of complete possibility.
